The environmental and socio-economic backwater Mbao is divided into two main parts:
1) Local people and government, associations or professionals with an activity in the creek are surveyed to determine their vision towards the creek, their dependence with the latter and also their expectations.
2) An environmental study is conducted to characterize the degree of naturalness of the study site and the various problems it faces. For example, an analysis of aerial photos and satellite images will help identify the various changes of occupation land since 1954 on the study site. Physical parameters (water depth profile of the creek, plenty of water ...) and physicochemical parameters (salinity, pH, turbidity ...) will also be calculated and analyzed.
Following completion of these studies, recommendations and proposals for restoration, preservation and enhancement of the creek will be made. Then, a monitoring committee for the project will be created with people motivated to save the swamp.
