Hi, today we will learn definite articles, indefinite and partitive. Have fun!
1) The definite article: the - the - the
It serves to introduce a noun or noun meaning:
- One thing or a being already identified .
Eg There was a burglary. The thief was arrested.
- One thing or be easily identifiable.
Ex Pass me the papers on the table.
- A general category of beings or things.
Ex Fish Red is a refined sort who likes comfort.
Articles 'the' and ' the' contract with prepositions 'to' and 's e' to form at / to 'and' the / of '.
• Will feed the cats. ('Them' cats)
• I speak to the teacher. ('To' teacher)
• I speak of the teacher. ('To' teacher).
2) The indefinite article: a - a - of
It is used to refer to a person or thing:
- Not readily identifiable
Eg A man entered the room. (We do not know who this man)
- What the speaker does not specify .
Ex Yesterday I saw a good movie.
Warning !
'Des ' in the negative, or before a plural adjective before the name becomes 'de' or 'd'' (before a vowel).
• She of dresses. ==> It did not dress / She of beautiful dresses.
• I have seen animals. ==> I have not seen of animals / I saw of huge animals.
3) The partitive article: the - of - of
is an indefinite article used before a noun meaning:
- A reality uncountable ( He drinks milk of )
- An abstract thing (You the courage to do so).
The partitive article introduces a noun which means a portion or quantity of something that you can not count.
To get to tell the difference, put the name given in the singular.
If we can replace 'of' by a ' or a' is an indefinite article.
- I caught of microbes in the sea
I caught a microbe in the sea (So: = the indefinite article)
"I am disgusted of sea bathing (You can not replace by a definite article so it contracted.)
Do not confuse the , definite article and contracted of , partitive article.
Tip
- I drink of coffee. (I drink some coffee ==> partitive article.)
